Reading Rainbow comes to the end of its 26-year run on Friday [August 28]; it has won more than two-dozen Emmys, and is the third longest-running children’s show in PBS history — outlasted only by Sesame Street and Mister Rogers.
Grant says the funding crunch is partially to blame, but the decision to end Reading Rainbow can also be traced to a shift in the philosophy of educational television programming. The change started with the Department of Education under the Bush administration, he explains, which wanted to see a much heavier focus on the basic tools of reading — like phonics and spelling.
Grant says that PBS, CPB and the Department of Education put significant funding toward programming that would teach kids how to read — but that’s not what Reading Rainbow was trying to do.
So yeah, phonics, the thing that literally funded my graduate education in reading has killed my favorite childhood reading show. It’s a full circle moment.

Guess what tomorrow is! The fall premier of my favorite show, So You Think You Can Dance! Last week they showed a clip show of Nigel’s top 15 dances of a five seasons.
So I thought I’d share my favorites from season 2 until now. (I didn’t watch season one, curses.) Featuring Youtube clips and Comments by me. Beware the sappiness abounds… it’s just what I like.

Check out my friend Tyler on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Love the Lion King T-shirt. I think that this was his senior trip. Not bad, huh?

I love it. Tonight’s permiere was just as good as the 1998 series. It’s like a romantic show based on mythology and psychology. Like, it’s made for me. Now everybody watch Cupid so it will last more than half a season.
And that love advice from Captain Kirk? “Go Boldly.” And in this case it was to Ireland to find your deported singer songwriter boyfriend, so that works for me.

Today Heath Ledger was nominated for an Oscar on the first anniversary of his death. That bums me out. I miss him.

You get a golden star and certification as a fellow nerd if you get the joke about Jeremy Piven. If you are not a Broadway nerd all will be revealed in the comments. NPH rocks my socks.

I think that there was a staff writer on “West Wing” from FSU. The episode on tonight had a suicidal pilot from Tallahassee. The pilot (the first episode not the suicidal one) had a couple of FSU political science majors who recognized Josh in a cafe. And Arnold Vinick (Alan Alda) almost took a professorship at FSU after he lost the election before he took the Secretary of State position.
Anyway… Erin is a nerd.

Oh my gosh, whoa. I was going on to CBS.com to catch the episode of How I Met Your Mother that I missed last night and I saw the add to the new CBS online mini show called Novel Adventures presented by Saturn. And boy is it ever presented by Saturn. About ever other word is ” and that’s why I love the safety features of the Saturn Vue Hybrid.” The main character is the wife of a Saturn dealer (who’da thunk.) It’s completely cheesy. Oh and in the latest episode Lizzie starts out by missing her friends in Boston, when her new friends of 2 weeks surprise her with a male stripper on the set of CSI:NY. She says as she’s driving away in her…wait for it… Saturn Vue, that it was the best birthday of her entire life. I just don’t get it. They are obviously trying to to market to women (it’s about a woman’s book club) but it seems like it was written by male ad writers on a strict deadline. Our lead, the one with the Saturns and the birthday, wears twin sets and buns, but do you know what her favorite music is? 50cent and The Vampire Club (or something like that.) Oh and guess what the they’re doing next week… pole dancing lessons.
They say that product placement is going to take over advertising… with all the people being able to fast froward through commercials. But if this is what it looks like were in trouble.
